Sharon Van Etten – Serpents

November 23, 2011

There’s just something about Sharon Van Etten’s breathy, effortless delivery that endears her to just about anyone who gives a listen. Layered over tracks like “Serpents” that build until they are on the cusp of bursting, her soft-as-clouds vocals demonstrate control, not reservation. She sings as if she’s holding something back, but it’s clearly purposeful, and instead of it detracting from the power of her performance, it enhances it, for so much of Van Etten’s music is about fear of the self. Upcoming album Tramp is due out February 7th and is sure to be a highlight of the musical new year.
