U.S. Girls – The Boy Is Mine

November 25, 2011

Meghan Remy’s says that her greatest influence is top-ten pop, so a cover of the Brandy/Monica hit “The Boy is Mine” isn’t much of a surprise. Instead, the shocker is that the R&B hit actually works better as a fuzzed-out, low-fi, drawling noise-jam. The track begins with thirty seconds of dark and drowsy distortion, setting the tone for the underlying wildly sinister message of Brandy/Monica lyrics. And the sinisterness of the song doesn’t end their; under an industrial, post-apocalyptic mix full of beeps and cries, Remy’s vocal register continuously climbs until her vitriol reaches breaking point. It’s a powerful cover that is both transformative and true to the original track.
