The Roots – One Time

December 7, 2011

Undun is a small story, and for that reason, it may be the most ambitious and daring album The Roots have released to date. The album’s ability to create a relatable narrative and then explore that narrative from all angles is truly remarkable. While sonically it’s comparable to a lot of The Roots old work, conceptually it has more in common with The Antler’s Hospice than, say, How I Got Over. “One Time” is just a small taste among the many flavors that come out of One Time, but the furiously energetic rhymes of Dice Raw and Phonte make it a standout. And, coming from an album full of standouts, that’s saying something.
