Youth Lagoon – Goodbye Again (John Denver Cover)

December 14, 2011

There’s something disarming about Trevor Powers’ voice. It’s this quality of childishness, as if, in some form of Peter Pan syndrome, he resents that every morning he wakes up and finds himself in an adults body. Youth Lagoon, no matter what lyrics Powers is singing, makes you ache in a nostalgic sort of way. But, boy, is it a good “ache.” This John Denver cover finds Powers displaying more vocal power than we saw on The Year of Hibernation, and that power turns “Goodbye Again” into a truly desperate but resigned lullaby. The track is so simple and yet so powerful; it dares you to turn off your lights and blast it alone in your room. Most importantly, “Goodbye Again” is another sign that, in Trevor Powers, the indie music world has found a true talent, and that The Year of Hibernation was just the tip of the iceberg.
