Amadou & Mariam – Dougou Badia (Feat. Santigold)

January 14, 2012

It’s not the novelty of Afro-indie rock, nor the story behind Amadou and Mariam (a blind, Malian couple that met in school and fell in love making music) that makes “Dougou Badia” feel like a four-minute, musical epic. It’s not the genre-hopping, nor the collaborations with Santigold and Nick Zinner that make it feel both simultaneously challenging and familiar. It’s the fact that, on this track specifically, Amadou and Mariam have captured an energy that transcends genre, discovering a common sonic ground where it doesn’t matter whether they are singing in Malian French or English. It’s a track that, overwrought as this may sound, truly demonstrates that the universality of the musical language is undeniable when done right. Their EP, titled the same as this track, will be released on Jan 24th via nonesuch.
