Chairlift – I Belong In Your Arms

January 28, 2012

Like a lot of great synth-popists, Chairlift borrows and steals from the 80s, consciously playing with certain generic tropes that they know will immediately have us transported back to that strange decade. But, more than simple 80s pastiche, songs like “I belong in Your Arms” are special because they demonstrate just how perfect of an arena synth-pop can be for the elucidation of raw, powerful and dramatic emotion. This is a track that is about the simultaneous simplicity and complexity of love–the frustration that love could and, more importantly, should be so easy. Something was released on January 24th, and while “I Belong in Your Arms” is certainly a standout, the whole album represents a large leap forward for Chairlift.
