Cillie Barnes – Indian Hill
Strangely, “Indian Hill” opens like some predictable track from the Tom Petty era. Then, suddenly, Cillie Barnes hops in and injects an energy that is simultaneously youthful and world-weary. It’s the hoarseness of her voice–she always sounds like she’s just gotten home from a loud party but isn’t quite done partying. The cracks and creaks of her delivery never feel manipulated or forced, but totally organic, and it makes Barnes’ sonic persona that much more endearing. She has an EP “coming soon,” and with the refreshing, genuine brightness she brings to the often dark and cynical indie-pop landscape, it can’t come soon enough.
