Mount Eerie – Distorted Cymbals
While the real sonic driver behind “Distorted Cymbals” is the simple two-chord guitar strum that carries the track from start to finish, it’s Phil Elverum’s vocals that characterize this track. He sings with the same ethereal matter-of-factness that James Murphy sometimes touches when he’s wearing his heart on his sleeve. But Elverum is no idolizing, copy-cat; he sounds more like a kid dreaming out-loud in his bedroom than a conscious synthesizer of his predecessors. It’s that feeling of intimacy that makes tracks like “Distorted Cymbals” so warm and rewarding, as if, when clicking the play button, we’ve suddenly become privy to something.
