Frank Ocean – White

March 19, 2012

There’s an hint of melodrama behind every note Frank Ocean hits and every lyric he croons. It’s his empty, unfulfilled romantic notions, combined with a vocal delivery that feels vaguely nostalgic for an undefinable but better time, that creates a tone of almost hammy emotionality. But, as we said about “Thinking About You,” Ocean totally pulls it off, mostly because he explores somewhat cliche themes with such an honest and almost juvenile approach that it’s sort of jarring. On “White,” Ocean stands before us sonically naked — so little mediation between listener and artist that you feel as though you’ve been granted a peek at something secret.
