The National – The Rains of Castamere

May 29, 2012

Like Zach Condon’s voice truly defines Beirut, Matt Berninger’s defines The National. It’s not just that the vocals are what you come away with — the taste left in your mouth as the tune fades out — it’s that Berninger’s patented baritone croon oozes into the sonic cracks and crevices of the track as a whole. “The Rains of Castamere” is a strange track for the National in that it has none of the dark pop/rock hooks they’ve made a living on, but it sure does show off the strangeness of Berninger’s vocals that has kept us coming back to The National again and again.
