White Arrows – Roll Forever
Art and drugs have always and will always be in some way married. The matrimony hasn’t always been a happy one, but it’s undeniable that those who are bent toward making art — attempting to create material world embodiments of their soul — are often also bent toward expanding their consciousness using substances. While LSD helped define an entire generation of artists in the 60s and 70s, it seems that MDMA will define the current one. “Roll Forever” doesn’t exist so much as an ode to the drug, but rather attempts to evoke some of the experience of “rolling.” The abrasive opening simulates a rough come-up, and then the chorus represents the adjustment and resulting contentment that the drug can fuel. MDMA is prevalent, relevant and generationally formative — for artists to ignore it as a creative subject would be a shame.
