Grizzly Bear – Sleeping Ute

June 12, 2012

The guys behind Grizzly Bear are simultaneously ambitious and perfectionistic — a dangerous combination if you’re trying to get something done quickly. But it seems that the resulting work is always worth the wait with the Brooklyn foursome, as “Sleeping Ute” is another example of music that, while clearly being the product of intense calculation and planning, feels effortlessly spontaneous. Grizzly Bear has always been defined by Daniel Rossen’s voice — a boyish wail with a bit of soul — but this track stands out mostly because, instrumentally speaking, it treads in new territory for the band. The tinniness in the tone of the guitars and the elements of blues hint that Rossen and the guys have been playing with new toys, exploring new generic tropes. The yet-to-be-titled album is due out September 18th — whatever they call it, we’ll be buyers.
