Cat Power – Cherokee

June 27, 2012

Chan Marshall sings with power, but you always get the feeling that a stiff wind could blow her over. It’s that high-wire act — the grand potential for pain and collapse that lies behind every verse she utters — that makes Cat Power so arresting, so wildly alluring. After four years of silence, Marshall is dropping a new album and “Cherokee” is rumored to be the opening track. It feels like a relatively pedestrian Cat Power track until the one minute mark, when suddenly the tune is transformed by a rolling drum beat and a mix that is almost funky. Sun is due out due out August 4th — the indie rock universe waits with bated breath.
