Twin Shadow – Golden Light
Sure, George Lewis Jr.’s brand of new wave emo pop feels like it could soundtrack the climactic moment of your proverbial 80’s flick; with synths a roaring and his Peter Gabriel styled vocals, you can so easily picture the kiss under the stars that happens at about minute ninety-five of an entire decade of cinema. But what separates Twin Shadow from sonically comparable acts is the utter thematic coldness Lewis Jr. evokes in just about every track. This narrator looks a lot like the guy on the cover of the album; he wears a leather jacket and he doesn’t really give a shit. On tracks like “Golden Light,” Lewis Jr. has truly created a character, a fictional persona that, as we hop from verse to chorus to verse, we simultaneously hate and understand.
