Apes & Horses – Magenta

August 29, 2012

Apes & Horses came onto the scene touring with Wu Lyf, and the pairing makes sense in that both bands share a rawness, an unmediated delivery of emotion that seems almost impossible in a world so overwhelmingly self-reflexive. Sure, the wild, tribal sound that endeared so many to Wu Lyf isn’t there — Apes & Horses sound more like Suckers than anyone else — but this band uses less force and energy to pack a similar emotional punch. Magenta is gorgeously arranged, a gravely, balladic tune that’s meant for long drives in the rain.
