Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti – Only In My Dreams

August 16, 2012

On Before Today, it felt like everything was finally coming together for Ariel Pink — that his strange brand of uber-lo-fi, chronologically ambiguous, plastic pop somehow found its sweet spot. It wasn’t an album of compromise, but rather an occasion of an artist perfecting his sound and therefore widening his audience. On “Mature Themes” it seems the process of refinement is continuing. “Only In My Dreams” finds Pink at his cheesiest, pushing things to saccharinity and then taking a step back and delivering a polished shoe-tapper that feels like a vestige of another time. Put plainly, nobody sounds like Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti and few dare try.
