Wild Nothing – Paradise

August 14, 2012

Although Gemini was dripping with all the emotionality and isolation of the 80s, as well as playing with the decade’s defining generic tropes, it felt like it fit snuggly into the current indie rock landscape — somewhere between Real Estate, Bradford Cox and Ariel Pink. But “Paradise,” off of the upcoming Nocturne, takes the 80s pastiche to a whole new level. Jack Tatum’s disaffected, reverb-ridden vocals and a synth heavy mix could easily be playing under the proverbial Molly Ringwald make-out scene. But “Paradise” is more than just a piece of nostalgic ear-candy; it’s thoughtful and deliberately crafted pop that is simultaneously true to its influences and totally fresh.
