Yeasayer – Glass of the Microscope

August 23, 2012

Yeasayer is at their best when they use Chris Keating’s idiosyncratic whine to build tracks that feel otherworldly, like some strange alien incarnation of psychedelic pop/R&B. Fragrant World, although a mess at times, does exactly this, and “Glass of the Microscope” is the best example of it. The beat feels like it comes from the depths and Keating’s vocals are played with until they’ve lost all humanness. It’s a track that, like most great Yeasayer tunes, builds into something almost tribal — something that feels vaguely spiritual.
