Animal Collective – New Town Burnout

September 5, 2012

With Merriweather Post Pavillion, Animal Collective took a giant step toward mainstream palatability without compromising any aspect of their sonic identity. They integrated hooks that had half of Brooklyn whistling their tunes but kept the cacophonic mania that characterized so much of their best work. New album, Centipede Hz, seems to be, stylistically speaking, a step forward and a regression. On tracks like “New Town Burnout,” the more mature, post-children Animal Collective seems to be on display, and yet, the nuts-and-bolts feel like remnants of the band in their earlier days. It’s patented Animal Collective sound-collage — epic, wild and hungry.
