The xx – Swept Away

September 11, 2012

As minimalist as their hugely successful debut album was, early leaks from upcoming full-length Coexist suggest that the xx are going forward with a sound that is truly skeletal, or, at the very least, stripped-down. They’re a band that uses silence to enhance their sound and uses their sound to emphasize their moments of silence. On tracks like “Swept Away,” this sonic minimalism adds weight to every syllable uttered and every chord struck, for it all feels so carefully chosen, so deliberately decided upon. It’s that weight that makes the xx so compelling — they might be young, foolish and even naive, but they take themselves and their emotions quite seriously. And you’d be a fool not to do the same.
