Grouper – The Man Who Died On His Boat

February 5, 2013

Grouper’s, The Man Who Died On His Boat isn’t a new album strictly speaking. It’s a collection of unreleased songs recorded at at the same time as their 2008 LP, Dragging a Dead Deer Up a Hill. However, even though it was recorded as the same time, it sounds very different. The title track is almost camp-fire like as it swings up and down, over and over again. Lead vocalist, Liz Harris, starts singing line after line without finishing the one before. She creates a devastatingly beautiful and calm effect. The best way to describe this music is to compare it to the ocean. It is as if Harris’s vocals are waves, crashing on the ground just as other waves in the distance are already crashing. Grouper is making some of the most peaceful music out there.
